Brief Bio of the speaker:

Professor Elisabeth STEINER was born in Vienna, Austria. She is now an international judge and the vice president of First section at the European Court of Human Rights, Strasbourg (France); member of the Committee of the Rules of the European Court of Human Rights; member of the Status Committee of the European Court of Human Rights and member of the Judicial Studies Program Committee of the European Court of Human Rights; appointed member of the Expert Committee on Labor Law of the Chamber of Attorneys, Vienna; member of various international lawyersassociations and of a European lawyers’network in Vienna.

    Professor Steiner got her bachelor degree in Cultural Management in University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, and got her master and doctor degree of law and business administration in University of Vienna and University of Economics respectively.

    Professor Steiner established legal practice in Vienna, January 1988 and practiced as a solicitor and barrister independently since then until she was elected as a judge. She was actively involved in human rights and civil liberties issues, such as the law applying to aliens, womens issues, and for almost 20 years, she conducted daily forensic experience in pursuit of fundamental civil and human rights in all types of legal action, in all the courts and before all types of administrative authorities in Austria, in the context of her labour law activities, including both individual and collective labour law, legal activities in relation to cases involving practices repugnant to human dignity.

    Professor Steiner was elected and re-elected to the European Court of Human Rights as a judge in 2001 and 2007. In 2012, she was elected as the vice president of First Section of the Court. She has been a judge in various leading Grand Chamber cases of the Court such as A. and Others v. the United Kingdom; AL-JEDDA v. the United; AL-SKEINI and Others v. the United Kingdom; ALVAREZ LECEGUI v. Spain; ANHEUSER-BUSCH INC. v. Portugal; ASSOCIATION SOS ATTENTATS and DE BOERY v. France; BURDEN and BURDEN v. the United Kingdom; BYKOV v. Russia; D.H. AND OTHERS v. the Czech Republic; E.B. v. France; EL MAJJAOUI & STICHTING TOUBA MOSKEE v. the Netherlands; FERNANDEZ OLMO v. Spain; FINCI v. Bosnia and Herzegovina; FOLGERO and Others v. Norway, etc.
